Here are some aspects of home improvements that can be made to your kitchen, bathrooms, and living areas.
Improvements to make to your kitchen
Countertops have quite a presence in a kitchen. Therefore, a beautiful, modern one can make a world of a distance. In particular, natural stone countertops will instantly upgrade your kitchen.
Add a backsplash
You know what goes well with a nice, modern countertop? An eye-catching backsplash. There are so many unique designs, materials and color combinations available. All you need to do is visit a local home improvement store and you’ll see how nice they can be!
The area between you countertop and cabinets can make your kitchen pop!
Sometimes all your kitchen needs are new appliances. Outdated or unusable appliances can really detract from a room. Stainless steel appliances can have a huge impact the overall kitchen design. Benefit from SMART technology and go even further when it comes to making your kitchen a more modern and efficient space.
Repaint your cabinets
If you want to make some minor, inexpensive improvements to your home, consider repainting your kitchen cabinets. A fresh new coat of paint can give a kitchen a renewed look. Making that faded maple or oak vibrant again can make the space more beautiful.
Moreover, repainted cabinets aren’t an improvement that requires you to make additional changes.
Add a pendant light
Adding a pendant light is another inexpensive improvement. Pendant lights will go perfectly over a kitchen island or peninsula. They’re modern, fit in well with most kitchen designs, and they add character to kitchens. You’ll find pendant lights that come in all kinds of designs.
Improvements to make to your bathroom
A new countertop can be great for bathrooms. The space is smaller than a kitchen is, so an elegant countertop will stand out quite a bit. Jut like for kitchens, we recommend natural stone countertops for bathrooms as well. Granite, quartz, marble, and travertine are some examples of great natural stone materials.
Just make sure to have the surface sealed, since natural stone materials are vulnerable to moisture. Adding sealant will protect the natural stone for 2-3 years.
Maybe your bathroom is still covered in boring wallpaper, or maybe you’re just sick of your current bathroom wall color. This is your chance to change it up! There are so many options available, from more bold colors to lighter colors that can make a bathroom space seem larger.
If you have the budget for it, consider having granite tiles installed on your wall to result in an impressive look. Lining half of bathroom walls with granite tiles are a popular aspect of today’s home modernization. The other half remains as painted wall.
Frameless glass shower doors
Frameless glass shower doors is another bathroom improvement trend that won’t be fading anytime soon. Get rid of those old shower curtains and make your bathroom more visually appealing. Glass panes covering the shower area will make the space seem much bigger.
Modern light fixtures
Just like pendant lighting, adding modern light fixtures can impact a bathroom space in a positive way. Visit your local home improvement store and you’ll find plenty of options. Since a bathroom space is smaller, though, we suggest only having a few light fixtures installed.
Improvements to make to your living area
A complete remodel isn’t always the solution to improving a living room. If a remodel is what you have in mind then contact Toscana Floorings for flooring and remodeling services. But if you’re just interested in home improvements that are more subtle, why not add an elegant area rug?
An area rug can help protect a floor while also giving your living room some character.
A pallet wall can give a room character without having to paint all the walls in a room. It serves as a focal point in an otherwise plain room. It’s basically a collection of wood planks staggered and placed atop one another to form a textured wall. It definitely helps a room look more cozy.
Creating a pallet wall requires the use of power tools, so hiring a professional will probably be necessary.
Dimmer lights can help control the atmosphere of a room. Instead of simply having extremely bright light or no lighting at all, light dimmers allow for there to be a variation of light settings. By installing a dimmer in your living room, you won’t just have the two extremes; lighting will be completely under your control.
Obviously, there’s always the new furniture option. If you don’t like your current furniture, get some pieces replaced. The difficult part, though, is making sure that the new furniture matches with your living room setting. Online shopping is quite popular, but sometimes it’s better to go see pieces in-person.
Create Your Dream Kitchen
From bigger aspects to more minor detail, remodeling your kitchen can help bring it back to life. For the best results, it’s important to hire a company that offers the best materials and has skilled professionals on staff to ensure that everything is completed properly.
A kitchen is considered to be the heart of the home, so it’s important to make sure it looks that way as well. Some kitchens, though, look like they’re in dire need of a renovation. If that’s the case for your kitchen, you can improve your lifestyle by having your kitchen remodeled. A kitchen is a place where families eat, make delicious food, and spend time together. If your kitchen can’t provide that, you probably need to remodel it.
Turn Your Dream Into Reality
It’s easy to get excited about a kitchen remodel, but actually completing the remodel can be a whole different story. A kitchen is made of may different components, from flooring, to cabinets, to countertops, and appliances. Most people have a general idea of how they want their kitchen to end up looking, but actually finding the products and materials needed is far from most people’s expertise. At Toscana Floorings, we’ll be happy to help you plan your kitchen remodel.
Whether you’re just replacing some smaller fixtures or are changing larger aspects of your kitchen, we help come up with design plans that yield beautiful results. We offer a wide variety of high-quality materials so that you’re never limited by a lack of options. We also have design experts who know which materials work well together in particular settings. We use our expertise to help suggest things based on your preferences but, in the end, the choice is yours.
Getting the Job Done Right
Completing a kitchen remodeling project can require a number of different skills. These include tile and cabinet installation, electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, and many more. Our experts have tons of experience in these areas in order to guarantee that your kitchen remodeling project goes smoothly.
One issue you might come across when it comes to kitchen remodeling projects is that one material might look amazing on its own, but when other elements are added to it, you begin to realize that it doesn’t work as well in the space as you originally thought. Since we work with you throughout the entire remodeling process, we’ll make sure that each step is completed properly before moving onto the next one. If we do come across any issues, we can resolve them quickly and efficiently.
We also make sure to pay attention to how your kitchen flows into the rest of your home. Different materials have different weights, which means that we have to pay attention to load-bearing requirements. We’re always careful to check your home’s structure to make sure that it can handle any extra weight that might be added. Also, try our best to ensure that the project is completed quickly, because we know how disruptive a kitchen remodeling project can be to your daily routine.
Kitchen cabinets can have a major impact on a kitchen’s design. They take up the most space in a kitchen, thus, they should be given considerable attention when it comes to kitchen design. Even past the design aspect, cabinetry strength and durability should be something to consider when it comes to cabinetry. Here are some things to consider when looking into kitchen cabinetry.
At what point in a kitchen remodeling project should you start to consider cabinets?
If you plan on remodeling your kitchen then you should plan everything out before even hammering the first nail. This applies everything from flooring and countertops to wall paint and cabinetry. Each aspect is dependent on the others and the goal is to make sure that your whole kitchen flows well together.
Before starting construction, you should at least decide on your color scheme and your measurements. Measurements are applicable to your cabinets and your appliances. Why your appliances? Because your kitchen cabinets will probably have to fit around your appliances.
Due to this, cabinet measurements and color should be predetermined. You can base your cabinet color on the colors of your countertop, walls and flooring. In the end, the purpose of your cabinet color is to compliment the features of your kitchen that truly stand out, namely your countertops and backsplash.
What type of wood do you want your kitchen cabinets made of?
When it comes to wood for kitchen cabinetry, your options are basically light wood, dark wood, and various shades in between. When deciding on a type of wood, consider the size of and lighting in your kitchen. Smaller kitchens will seem larger with lighter colored woods like maple or oak, while larger kitchens can afford bolder looks provided by darker wood colors like mahogany or hickory.
Additionally, kitchens that experience less natural light would benefit from lighter colored cabinets. On the other hand, kitchens that experience abundant natural light can afford to have darker colored cabinets installed.
Also, consider the rest of the fixtures in a kitchen. Certain countertop colors will call for certain cabinet colors. In the end, you can choose cabinets of any color, but the most common colors are gray, black, white, and various shades of brown.
How to purchase kitchen cabinets
Just like with most products, cabinetry is going to have different levels of quality and versatility. It depends on your preferences and your as to which level is best for your remodeling project. You’ll find cabinets divided into the categories of: ready to assemble (RTA), stock, semi-custom and custom.
What does each option entail?
Ready to Assemble (RTA): This type of cabinet is best for homeowners that are looking for a fast and easy cabinet solution. You can purchase RTA cabinets from your local home improvement store. This type of cabinet is what it is, meaning you can’t have it customized. They’re quite inexpensive and perfect for those who prefer DIY installations.
Stock: Purchased pre-sized directly from the manufacturer. This type of cabinet can’t be altered either, but you can benefit from affordable, good-quality cabinets by simply picking a reputable manufacturer. Stock cabinets are constructed on-site and are usually made using a particleboard material.
Semi-Custom: With this type of cabinetry, homeowners will have some say in sizing at this level of cabinetry. additionally, you’ll have a wider selection of styles, finishes and storage capabilities to choose from. Pricing for semi-custom cabinets is perfect for homeowners who are looking for a high-quality addition to their kitchens. Most times, pricing also includes installation.
Custom: Custom cabinets are truly high-end cabinetry. You’ll be able to choose from countless design options, including different styles, finishes and accessories. Custom cabinets are made-to-order, so you’ll have complete control over the look and custom features of your cabinets and will know exactly what to expect when said cabinets are delivered to your home.
What types of cabinets should you consider?
Every kitchen has some variation of cabinet types. As you go through the remodeling process, it’s important to understand and be able to communicate with certain phrases. So, when you’re going through each section of cabinetry, use the following terms:
Base: These are the cabinets that are either attached to or hover above your floor. Base cabinets can range from 2-3 feet in depth while height is determined by your kitchen layout. These are more spacious, because most homeowners use base cabinets to store their pots and pans.
Wall: These cabinets are attached to your walls and are above your kitchen counters. They’re typically 12 inches in depth because they store glasses and mugs, or stacked dishes and bowls. Semi-custom or custom-built wall cabinets can of course have more depth if needed.
Tall: Tall kitchen cabinets can basically be called pantry cabinets. They’re over 80 inches in height and are perfect for storing food, paper plates, lunchboxes, containers, etc. If your kitchen doesn’t have room for a walk-in pantry, then a tall cabinet or two should work just as well. In fact, tall cabinets will probably look nicer in your kitchen.
Specialty: Specially designed cabinets for unique storage situations. For instance, installing corner cabinets that open at a particular angle or placing a built-in bottle rack inside of a particular cabinet is a good example.
What about cabinet finishes?
You’ve chosen your cabinet grade, type and color, so what’s next?
What type of finish do you want on your kitchen cabinets? Your can choose from painted, stained, glazed, distressed and antiqued. Or, you can get a combination of some of them
Stained cabinets are a popular option, and for good reason. Stained wood offers character and is more attention-grabbing than a more plain, solid-colored cabinet. To some extent, stained cabinets can be compared to a granite countertop. Granite has a natural grain that results in a random mix of color shades and patterns. Such a random, imperfect design makes the countertop material inviting and visually appealing.
Stained cabinets don’t exactly experience color changes, but staining does result in different shades of the same colors, giving the wood a natural, earthy look.
Glazed kitchen cabinets are a popular option. This type of finish will give the wood a unique, glossy look. White cabinets are often glazed to give the material added depth of character, rather than its original plain look.
You also have the distressed, or antique options for cabinet finishes. This finishing options are meant to make your cabinets look somewhat aged. Sounds strange, doesn’t it? But many appeal the weathered look provided by these finishes.
Not every material looks best when it’s brand-new. This applies to wood in particular. Why do you think the random grain in hardwood flooring is so widely appreciated and sought-after? Homeowners often want their homes to have character to help give their home a cozier feel.
What advanced options do you have for cabinetry?
Carpenters can be extremely creative with their woodwork. They have the ability to add customized features to projects to enhance its appeal to the buyer. As you’d expect, the catch for buyers is that they’ll have to pay extra for those customized features. Even so, the work that’s done on custom cabinetry is often well worth the money it costs.
For example, pullout recycling and trash cans can help make life a bit easier. Custom-made wine racks are a sought-after feature for wine-lovers and other people who have lots of wine that they need stored. If the wine rack is something you’d like to show off, consider having the cabinet covered by a glass panel so people can see the wine rack without having to open or pull the cabinet door. As for trash bins or recycling bins, you’d best keep those hidden.
Also, cabinet drawers that pull out all the way can be a great addition to a home. Too often, have to blindly reach for items that have gotten pushed all the way to the back of a drawer and sometimes even get our hands cute while doing so.
The time you’ll save with a remodeled, more functional kitchen will definitely add up among the years. Additionally, it’s satisfying having a kitchen that works well with you and your family’s lifestyle.
Final thoughts on kitchen cabinetry
You are going to take time out to think your kitchen remodel through. Therefore, it might help to run your ideas by a an expert interior designer. You’ll get great advice on all aspects of your kitchen remodeling project. If you don’t seek professional design assistance then at least try to take your kitchen remodel one step at a time. Choose your flooring, countertops, kitchen cabinets…and so on and so forth. Breaking things down can go a long way when it comes to big projects.
For installation and project completion, it’s best to hire one contractor. Communication will be simplified as well.
If there’s something that the contractor is not 100% capable of completing, chances are he/she will have another contractor on speed dial who’s capable of getting the job done. It’s not often that contractors can’t do something on their own, but parts of a remodel like plumbing can sometimes call for the assistance of a professional plumber.
The point is, a kitchen remodel is faster and easier if not done by a homeowner with little to no experience. Professional designers and installation experts can make a huge difference. Sure, you’ll have to pay for their services, but it’ll be well worth it knowing that the job was done right. The simpler you make a project, the better it is for you.
Simplify, simplify, simplify! You’ll be glad you did!

Everything where it belongs
One of the main things that people consider when it comes to bathroom remodeling is its ease of maintenance. Having a bathroom that’s difficult to maintain makes what should be a relaxing getaway even more stressful. Part of ensuring a lower-maintenance bathroom is proper installation of the fixtures you select. Our experts know exactly what it takes to have your bathroom materials installed properly.
Another issue with bathroom remodeling projects is ensuring that all the components are properly protected until the time of installation. Many bathroom components, like the tub, toilet, and vanity, are quite large, while many bathrooms can be quite small. We understand this and will work to transport and install the fixtures you choose carefully.
In addition to understanding you and your needs for your bathroom remodeling project, we will try to understand the layout of your home so ensure that we get the job done properly. Especially in the case of a large tub, we don’t want to find out later that the floor couldn’t support the weight. We’ll carefully examine the support structures of your home to make sure that your bathroom fits in with the rest of your home.
A shower remodel isn’t extremely complicated but still takes lots of consideration; more decisions go into shower remodels than you might think. Whether you’re planning a complete bathroom remodel or just want to update your shower, you’ll need to do your research and seek professional assistance. We’ll get into what to know about a shower remodel below:
What do you need from your shower?
First of all, you’ll need to think about what kind of shower you want yours to be. Do you want it to be a walk-in or a shower/bath combo? Do you care most about function or style? Or both? What’s you budget like?
Answering these questions can help you get the ball rolling. In the end, you can afford either a walk-in shower or a shower/bath combo with any reasonable budget. It’s the more specific features of either that will affect your budget.
You certainly won’t be short on options for shower remodel. You can find all kinds of showers featuring all kinds of materials.
Let’s get further into materials, designs, and overall costs…
Choosing a base and wall type
Fiberglass has been a reliable shower/tub material for quite some time. A fiberglass shower/tub is pre-shaped as a single piece. They’re typically used in homes that are still being built because installation is easiest when walls are not yet in place. Already-built homes, on the other hand, aren’t as perfect for fiberglass showers because the pre-formed piece don’t always fit through most doors, so that’s something to keep in mind.
Other than potential issues with installation, fiberglass is a great, waterproof material that will endure the test of time. It’s white color may eventually yellow and the surface can scratch; however, as-needed cleaning should combat those issues quite easily.
Acrylic is another common material for showers. The point that draws buyers in is its affordability. Basically, you’re just paying for acrylic sheets to cover the base and the walls. The sheets are water-resistant and quite versatile in design. They do a good job for a while, but issues can end up coming up over time.
Constant water pressure can weaken acrylic sheets at the seams and water can end up seeping through. This can ruin the base and end up causing leaking. The biggest issue is you won’t know what kind of damage is happening under the surface until it’s too late, and repairs can cost quite a bit. With all of that said, acrylic may fit your budget and you may never run into any issues with the material for shower remodel; our input simply serves as a precaution.
What about ceramic or porcelain tile for shower remodel?
Both are great options. Ceramic and porcelain offer functionality and style. You can customize designs and find both in all shapes, sizes, colors, patterns and textures. Additionally, ceramic and porcelain tiles offer grip, which is extremely important in a shower since the smaller the tiles are, the more grip you will have at your footing. That’s why 1-inch-by-1-inch tiles are so popular for shower floors.
You might be wondering what the difference is between ceramic and porcelain and why they are so often spoken of interchangeably. Essentially, ceramic tile is slightly more water absorbent than porcelain. Porcelain’s water absorption rate is less than 0.5%; thus, any rate slightly above that mark will be classified as ceramic.
Regardless of which one you choose, you’ll be getting a durable material that’s also visually appealing. And assuming your new shower isn’t be hidden by a curtain, a visually appealing shower is quite important to overall bathroom design.
Natural stone is the most visually appealing material. Unfortunately, though, it’s not as water-resistant as the others. Natural stone—granite, quartz, marble, travertine, soapstone, and limestone—is porous, meaning that moisture can cause damage to the material. You’ll need to have your natural stone sealed, whether it’s your shower, living room floor or kitchen countertop. Sealants are clear and they serve as a protective barrier. A sealant in a shower may need to be replaced as often as every six months.
You might be able to get away with natural stone as a shower wall material, but using it as flooring in your shower is quite risky. Constant water pressure will probably result in cracks or discoloration to your natural stone floor, which i al;ready quire pricey to begin with.
How to approach shower design
You just have to decide on flooring and walling and those are the two main decisions. But you’ll also have to decide on other design elements.
Choosing a functional shower is not too difficult. But going the extra mile in establishing a nice shower area will take more decisions. For instance, you could choose a frameless glass shower with a built-in bench, two rows of ingrained shelving, a skylight and a focal point design wall. Or you could opt for a doorless shower with multiple showerheads, including steam options, and an added shower window to let in some natural light. There are many options to choose from.
What shower trends aren’t going away anytime soon?
Modern home will probably feature the frameless shower look. A frameless glass shower turns your bathroom into a whole new space. It makes your bathroom seem larger and more open, adding a more modern appeal that’s welcome in any modern home.
HOW ABOUT A SHOWER WITHOUT DOORS?
Who needs shower doors anyway? Water tends to spray in one general direction. As long as you open up the base floor just slightly, water won’t flow out of the shower area.
This type of shower is best for master bathrooms. What people usually do is leave half of the wall to serve as some form of cover. A person would enter the shower to the left by simply walking in (no doors to open or slide).
HALF GLASS/HALF OPEN
You could also opt for the half glass/half open design. It’s just the way it sounds, half the shower opening would be covered by a vertical glass panel and the other half would be open, allowing the person to just walk right in.
If your budget is flexible, or have no limitations whatsoever, you might consider a steam shower. Spa-like showers are quite popular for master bathrooms these days. Being able to truly turn your home bathroom into an area of pure relaxation will go a long way in helping you de-stress. The concept of the shower will essentially stay the same, but you’ll have steam settings and other fixtures alongside.
Be creative with your shower’s tile design! Other rooms around your home might be held to a higher standard, but you also have less room for creativity in this room. You can combine wall colors for your three shower walls (assuming your hower has at least three walls). The side walls might be of a solid color, while the third is a multi-colored wall. You could, of course, have all solid colors, but maybe have different colors per wall.
Overall, your bathroom shower gives you many different avenues for creativity. Often times, the shower is directly across from the bathroom entrance. Using your shower as a unique focal point is a great idea if you’re remodeling your shower. Of course, the shower design really only matters if you have glass panels or if your shower is doorless. A shower covered by a curtain makes wall and floor design pointless.
How much will a shower remodel cost?
The cost of a shower remodel can range from $200 to $5,000. It all depends on the amount of work you want to have done and which materials you plan on using. For instance, installing a new liner over your shower/tub combo normally costs less than $200. Re-tiling your shower can cost around $500. In fact, you’ll pay more for labor than the actual tile for a re-tiling.
Tiling tends to cost around $25 – $30 per square foot, including the cost of labor and materials. Ceramic tile can be either the cheapest tile and the most expensive. You’ll have many different styles to choose from, some cheap and some more expensive. Porcelain is similar in terms of price and natural stone tile typically costs between $3 -$10 per square foot. Shower tiling is the rare situation where natural stone isn’t the most expensive material. Again, natural stone’s porosity is what discounts the material for bathroom showers.
It’s the fully renovated showers that will veer towards the higher side of the shower remodel range (around $5,000 or more).
Make the most of your bathroom
If you have no use for a bathtub, consider saving some bathroom space by having a walk-in shower installed. If you opt for a walk-in shower, you’ll be looking at paying a few thousand dollars. But you’ll probably only have to make this purchase in your lifetime, and it’ll be worth the cost.
Your master bathroom probably doesn’t have a shower/bath combo, but if it does, you might want to upgrade that as well. Master bathrooms are perfect for larger, more creative showers. If you still have the time to enjoy the occasional long bath, your master bathroom would look great with a stand-alone tub and a walk-in shower. You’ll need plenty of space, but if you can manage it, it’d look great!
